Irene Mueller-Harvey is a Chemist in the School of Agriculture, Policy and Development at the University of Reading, U.K., since 1993. She studied chemistry at the universities of Freiburg (Germany), Southampton (U.K.) and Hamburg (Germany). She then moved into agricultural chemistry with an MSc and PhD in Soil Chemistry (Reading University). Post-doctoral fellowships covered plant cell wall chemistry and tannins (AFRC Hurley Grassland Research Institute, U.K. and International Livestock Centre for Africa, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia). Her research focusses on the role of plant tannins in animal nutrition and health and includes two large EU projects "HealthyHay" (http://sainfoin.eu/) and "LegumePlus" (http:// legumeplus.eu/). She is keen on finding out what types of tannins are particularly useful for enhancing amino acid uptake, for reducing greenhouse emissions from ruminants and for tackling parasitic worms in ruminants and non-ruminants. Her list of publications can be found at: http://www.reading. ac.uk/staff/i-mueller~harvey.
